Welcoming a new lab member Juliana Guevara

January 01, 2025

In this new year, Celebrating our newest research scholar who recently joined our research team in the Physical, Information and Cognitive Human Factors Engineering (PIC-HFE) Research Laboratory at UTEP, Juliana (Juli) Guevara Mendoza.

Juli is a straight A 4.0 student, an Honors Scholar from the College of Nursing, and is training to be a Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner when she completes her degree program.

When not exercising her creativity in painting, and digital image-making, Juli brings her creative skills to several research projects in the PIC-HFE laboratory. In the Toilet Plume Project, in collaboration with environmental engineering researchers, and evidence-based nurse scientists, Juli is researching the various ways in which toxic toilet plume aerosolizes in Oncology wards in hospitals, and how design interventions can mitigate the harmful effects of the plume. In a second project, Juli is leading the effort to understand how nurse managers perceive the use of exoskeletons for safe patient handling. She is also contributing to testing and evaluating the usability of exoskeletons among healthcare professionals.

Juli’s skills in digital prototyping and wire-framing have resulted in the PIC-HFE research and design team (consisting of Prajina Edayath and Jessica Sanchez in addition to Juli) being selected this week for the second round in a mHealth competition they participated in designing a mobile health app - what great news! They will now be assigned a product development coach and mentor for the next rounds. In just a couple of months since joining the PIC-HFE Research Lab, Juli has already co-authored publications with our team members in post partum maternal health, and qualitative video analyses of exoskeleton usability. Her upcoming research projects also include extension of work we have completed in caregiving for persons with dementia, and modeling home care environments. She is also exploring older workers and design interventions for older workers.

Juli is also our official webmaster for the research laboratory and has put together a web page for us that will make our work truly shine. We can’t wait to show off Juli’s work via our new website soon. She is also the VP for the newly instituted HFES Student Chapter at UTEP which she, Prajina and Jessica worked so hard to institute.

Welcome Juli to our team! We are lucky to have you join our research team and contribute to advancing research in the PIC-HFE research laboratory.
